Happy Friday Families!
What crazy spring weather we are having, but it looks like next week holds some promise of Spring weather!! Over the last few weeks we have been working as a class on our shouting out without raising our hands and today we celebrated reaching this goal with a game of capture the flag this afternoon! The chicks living in BDK hatched on Monday and Tuesday and we have had some opportunities to go in and hold the chicks! Check out the class blog for pictures!! Here is a look at our week ahead and what we covered this week! Link to our classroom calendar: Important Dates: Monday May 2nd: All school walk for health and wellness week at 1:45pm Wednesday May 4th: LMC-please help learners remember their books Wednesday May 4th: We will begin MAP testing, we will have two sessions of Math this day from 9:15-10:15am and 1:15-2:15pm. Thursday May 5th: Third Grade field trip to the UW (all that offered to chaperone are welcome, but we may need you to drive separately depending on space on the buses, I will know more by Monday). Friday May 6th: 5th grade talent show-I will send out a more detailed time line when it is made available by the 5th grade team. Homework for the week: NO journal, book group work (enjoy!) Content Areas: Literacy: In literacy this week we did our final wrap on our Roary Tales and the end of our Folktales unit. These will be published on the blog for you all to enjoy next week! We also worked on some supportive strategies for comprehension related to understanding character point of view, character feeling and tone as well as strategies for fluency that include using very expressive voices to show differences in dialogue and putting ourselves in a storytelling role. Math: This week in math we worked in expert groups. Students were in small groups and worked on a specific strategy for subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. Students practiced their strategies with their small groups and gave each other helpful feedback for their explanations, finally, each student was video taped using their strategy and we presented those to the class. We also began the initial steps for our final math unit for the year! Our last math unit with be focused on Measurement and Data. This unit will not be done in seminar form and will be done in our homeroom. The unit will be focused on the learners creating a end of unit project using many skills including money, time, graphing, area and perimeter, liquid measurement as they design their own business. Students submitted their proposal ideas which included: bookstores, sports stadiums, video game stores and many more wonderful ideas! We are excited to get this started! **Students will be brining home their Geometry Reflections this weekend as well as their pre-tests, post-tests and play books. Please review these and sign the reflection and send all those back to school next week. During the Geometry pre-test, I unknowingly left the anchor charts we had been using up in the room during the test, by the time I noticed, many learners were already through half of their test. I felt it was unfair to make the learners restart their tests because of a mistake I made. I am so sorry for this mistake on my part, due to this many learners post-tests didn't reflect as much growth. Even with my mistake, this was a great unit for many of our learners! Please let me know if you have any questions about this and I again apologize for my mistake. Science: We continued working in our Heredity unit and discussed the connections of heredity and our families. Next week students will be bringing home a family tree to complete with you! Social Studies: We continued our unit on Asia this week! Students worked on mapping practice as well as had a unique lesson about Malaysia from Ms. Cieslik (who spent a year teaching there!). Have a wonderful weekend and please let me know if you have any questions!!

The chicks in BDK have hatched!! It has been great fun going to visit them this week and getting a chance to hold them! In science we are learning about another animal. The little chicks should hatch on Tuesday. Mr. Knight thought that between the crayfish and the chicks, you would like the chicks more. Is he right?
