The learners had a BLAST on our field trip to the UW on Wednesday. They were able to work in the genetics lab and explore DNA, work with some hands on activities that demonstrated different aspects of physics and learn some interesting facts about cows and the care they receive in order to stay healthy! Here are a few snapshots from our day!

We will leave school at 8:15 and return at 2:15 on Wednesday. The whole third grade will be in three groups and we will all rotate between the same three stations from 9:00am-12:30pm. Here are the three stations we will be rotating between: Dairy Cattle Center, Biotechnology Workshop, L.R. Ingersoll Physics Museum. *We will be having a late lunch, so please make sure your students eat a big breakfast at home. We will be using our school breakfast as a snack. If you still think your learner will need an extra snack, please make sure to pack one. Here is the dictado for next week: Since we are nearing the close of school, we thought we would ask you what you would change about this year? Between all the events, which have been your favorites? Content Areas: *Literacy: We have continued working in literacy on persuasive writing. We are continuing to expand our familiarity of of using the OREO structure for our persuasive writing. Learners have been working with stories that provide positive connections to examples of persuasion through reading stories like "I wanna Iguana". Next week we will be working on using persuasive language and transition words to add into our persuasive writing. In book groups we have been focusing on connecting to ideas we have previously been working with related to character feeling and text evidence. Students worked to identify a characters feeling and then support their reason with text evidence. *Math: In Measurement in Data this week we continued working on our understanding of time, creating hours of operations for the learner's businesses and began working with liquid measurement. Students worked with understanding the conversions between different units of measurements (Milliliters and liters), (gallon's, quarts, pints and cups). We did some interactive stations measuring different unlabeled containers and created a bar graph from this information. We also worked with word problems around creating a lemonade stand to further our understanding of liquid measurements. *Science: We continued our studying of heredity this week. In class we learned about the differences between inherited traits and learned behaviors and began creating our own monsters using our understanding of punnett squares, recessive traits and dominant traits. We will also use these in connection with some of our persuasive writing. Next week we will have our final activities in heredity and close this out with a final quiz on Friday May 20th or Monday May 23rd (depending on timing, I will let you know as the week progresses, but lets plan on the 20th). *Social Studies: We finished working with Asia this week and began working on South America. We will be learning about South America through our work with the musical, Rumpus in the Rainforest, as well as in class activities. The students are already doing a wonderful job with Rumpus. Please continue to help them practice the songs and their lines for the performance :) Have a great weekend and please let me know if you have any questions! Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent. There are over four billion people that live in Asia. Asia is divided into 48 countries, two of them (Turkey and Russia) having part of their land in Europe.

I do not have the math session scheduled yet, but it will not be for a few more weeks and will let you all know when those times are scheduled. Literacy: This week in literacy we presented out final Roary Tales (which will be graded this weekend and sent home for you all to enjoy). They will also be posted on the blog for students to share and view. We have continued with persuasive writing and focused on practicing persuasive writing based on learner's opinion using the "OREO" opinion style for writing. We will continue to evaluate more examples of persuasive writing next week as well as working on practicing our persuasive skills :) (although many are already advanced persuaders!!) Math: This week in Math we began working with time as our first focus of measurement and data. We started by reviewing what we already know about time and practicing measuring time elapse as well as creating schedules for our businesses. Science: We continued our heredity unit with activities focused on understanding our family trees, how traits are shared and passed as well as applying this knowledge and these skills to an activity around different dog breeds! We will continue working with heredity next week with several more hands on experiences. Social Studies: This week we learned about the Japanese Cherry Blossoms and their connection to Japanese culture. We will spend one more day in Asia next week and then begin practicing Rumpus in the Rainforest, the third grade play that we will be putting on with Ms. Schmitt and Ms. Cieslik's classes at the end of the year that focusing on studying South America. Ms. Cieslik, Ms. Schmitt and I working together diligently to take into account student preferences for roles as much as possible, but there are few leads and many learners participating so there will be some learners that may not get the role they hoped for. We will have roles ready by Monday. Dictado: Here is the dictado for next week: Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent. There are over four billion people that live in Asia. Asia is divided into 48 countries, two of them (Turkey and Russia) having part of their land in Europe. Please let me know if you have any questions and have a lovely weekend!! Persuasive writing is a type of writing that tries to convince someone of your opinion. In order to convince someone of your opinion, you must use good reasons and examples. Can you think of a time when you had to persuade someone?
Happy Friday Families!
What crazy spring weather we are having, but it looks like next week holds some promise of Spring weather!! Over the last few weeks we have been working as a class on our shouting out without raising our hands and today we celebrated reaching this goal with a game of capture the flag this afternoon! The chicks living in BDK hatched on Monday and Tuesday and we have had some opportunities to go in and hold the chicks! Check out the class blog for pictures!! Here is a look at our week ahead and what we covered this week! Link to our classroom calendar: Important Dates: Monday May 2nd: All school walk for health and wellness week at 1:45pm Wednesday May 4th: LMC-please help learners remember their books Wednesday May 4th: We will begin MAP testing, we will have two sessions of Math this day from 9:15-10:15am and 1:15-2:15pm. Thursday May 5th: Third Grade field trip to the UW (all that offered to chaperone are welcome, but we may need you to drive separately depending on space on the buses, I will know more by Monday). Friday May 6th: 5th grade talent show-I will send out a more detailed time line when it is made available by the 5th grade team. Homework for the week: NO journal, book group work (enjoy!) Content Areas: Literacy: In literacy this week we did our final wrap on our Roary Tales and the end of our Folktales unit. These will be published on the blog for you all to enjoy next week! We also worked on some supportive strategies for comprehension related to understanding character point of view, character feeling and tone as well as strategies for fluency that include using very expressive voices to show differences in dialogue and putting ourselves in a storytelling role. Math: This week in math we worked in expert groups. Students were in small groups and worked on a specific strategy for subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. Students practiced their strategies with their small groups and gave each other helpful feedback for their explanations, finally, each student was video taped using their strategy and we presented those to the class. We also began the initial steps for our final math unit for the year! Our last math unit with be focused on Measurement and Data. This unit will not be done in seminar form and will be done in our homeroom. The unit will be focused on the learners creating a end of unit project using many skills including money, time, graphing, area and perimeter, liquid measurement as they design their own business. Students submitted their proposal ideas which included: bookstores, sports stadiums, video game stores and many more wonderful ideas! We are excited to get this started! **Students will be brining home their Geometry Reflections this weekend as well as their pre-tests, post-tests and play books. Please review these and sign the reflection and send all those back to school next week. During the Geometry pre-test, I unknowingly left the anchor charts we had been using up in the room during the test, by the time I noticed, many learners were already through half of their test. I felt it was unfair to make the learners restart their tests because of a mistake I made. I am so sorry for this mistake on my part, due to this many learners post-tests didn't reflect as much growth. Even with my mistake, this was a great unit for many of our learners! Please let me know if you have any questions about this and I again apologize for my mistake. Science: We continued working in our Heredity unit and discussed the connections of heredity and our families. Next week students will be bringing home a family tree to complete with you! Social Studies: We continued our unit on Asia this week! Students worked on mapping practice as well as had a unique lesson about Malaysia from Ms. Cieslik (who spent a year teaching there!). Have a wonderful weekend and please let me know if you have any questions!! The chicks in BDK have hatched!! It has been great fun going to visit them this week and getting a chance to hold them! In science we are learning about another animal. The little chicks should hatch on Tuesday. Mr. Knight thought that between the crayfish and the chicks, you would like the chicks more. Is he right?
Happy Friday Families!
